Where Will I Be Volunteering?

Memusi A School

The school has 300 students from age 3-15, and is located near Magadi, Kenya.

Memusi B School

Called Memusi B by locals as it is the second of our schools to be built, the school has around 650 students aged 3-15.

Supporting the Maasai community, the schools provides breakfast and lunch to the children as for many these may be the only meals they get that day. With an average class size of up to 30, students often walk several miles to get to school so don’t be surprised if you see some of the younger ones having a nap.

The children are passionate about learning and there’s an opportunity for you to get involved as much or as little as you like. You can help with bringing the world to the children by running with arts and crafts lessons, playing sports, reading, career advice for the older classes, or teaching other lessons if you would like to. We’re very happy to talk through some ideas with you.

What Will A Typical Day Look Like?

School runs from 8am - 5pm, although typically we head off to school around 8am and leave about 4.30pm. Times will vary from day to day depending on the schedule so expect some early starts and long days. Evenings are usually spent planning the next day and preparing any sessions.

Resources & Donations

Resources are very limited in the schools so be prepared to bring everything you’ll need to run any of your sessions. Other items that are gratefully received are pencils and stationery, clothes and shoes. Please speak to your Trip Lead for more information on this.

Testimonials

IMG_8545_edited.jpg
Before our first visit to Memusi last summer, my husband said that once you’ve been, you’ll want to go back. He was right, it was amazing.  Our £15 a month means the world to the students and their families - meeting Seleyan, the girl we sponsor, and then her dad, who walked miles to thank us was very humbling. Everyday was different, and seeing our son and daughter (also on the trip) interact with the students was fantastic, and while volunteering at the medical camp we had fundraised for was really inspiring. In many ways, a couple of weeks playing basic games, blowing bubbles and watching kids running to catch them is the perfect antidote to our complicated life at home.
